FIFA has announced the candidates for the 2022 Player of the Year. 14 people were nominated, including Lionel Messi (35) and Kylian Mbafe (24, above PSG). Cristiano Ronaldo (37, Al Nasr) is not a candidate.
The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced the 14 finalists for the 2022 Best Male Player Award on the 12th (local time). The award is based on performance from the start of the 2021-22 season to the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The most notable candidate is Messi. Messi moved to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) last season. Messi scored 11 goals and provided 15 assists in 34 appearances. This season, he posted 12 goals and 14 assists in 19 games before the World Cup break.
Messi’s performance shone in the World Cup. This season, he recorded 19 goals and 5 assists in 20 games prior to the World Cup break. Mbappe also played a big role in the World Cup. He scored a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. He finished as the top scorer with 8 goals and 2 assists in 7 games.
The other 12 candidates are Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland (Manchester City), Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid), Ashraf Hakimi, Ney. They are Mar (PSG), Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona), Sadio Mane (Bayern Munich) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool).
Voting is conducted by media representatives, national team coaches, national team captains, and fan votes, each accounting for 25%. The 2021 Male Player of the Year award was won by Lewandowski. The results of this award will be announced on February 27th.
